“Fishing baskets are employed to catch fish; but when the fish are got, the men forget the baskets. Snares are employed to catch hares; but when the hares are got, men forget the snares. Words are employed to convey ideas; but when the ideas are grasped, men forget the words.” — Chuang Tzu
We are a group of self-professed Renaissance women and men of various backgrounds, ages, and of Greek descent who write under the nom de plum "VancityGreeks”. It has been suggested that we are pretended to be “ghosts” or cowards but rather we are following the long respectable tradition of creating a nom de plum to take the attention away from our individually and more importantly our families. We do not claim to represent all Greeks in Vancouver but rather that we are Greeks who may or may not live in the area.
Over Frappe
After becoming disillusioned by mainstream media and our local Greek newspapers, we decided to create a space where our Greek young adults, and professionals could find the other side of the story. We noticed that in our local Greek newspaper, stories were often driven by a personal agenda and often were disrespectful to our spiritual fathers and community leaders who give so much of their time and love.
So welcome to “VancityGreeks,” a pre-existing hashtag that has been floating around for years, now a place to discuss current events and ideals around our community and beyond.
Our inspiration?
We were inspired by the agoras of old where Hellenics would meet to share ideas, beliefs, and innovations for the betterment of society.
